modern au - baratheons

“the only thing them kids had in common was blood. all but stannis’ kid shireen had the same daddy. that robert baratheon that got himself killed when they were younger. hell, he had kids all over the damn country. not like he could be bothered to take care of them though. they were alright. the oldest one, mya, she got a job working with the arryns out in denver; went from copy girl to vp in five years. that boy gendy is a damn-near genius. knows more about computers and all that technology crap than you and i could ever dream. edric, he was raised in london, only one robert ever acknowledged. shireen? oh she’s stannis’ daughter for sure. balls of steel, knows both sides of the game. unofficially, they have nothing to do with each other. it would seem smart if they worked together; gendry’s got the brain, mya knows the business, edric’s got the money, and shireen as sweet a face as she’s got now after the plastic surgery, she’s the wildcard. but they don’t know each other.. officially.”

Howling Ghosts They Reappear (Stark Crime Family AU)

Inspired by this photo set

Visiting hours start at 8 AM, and, like clockwork, Jon is there. The guards recognize his half-brother as easily as Robb does; never once has Jon missed a weekend, not even when half the state was blanketed in several feet of snow. Allenwood is nearly a three-hour drive from Jon’s place outside Philly, but he’s never late; it’s something he got from their father. They can’t hug; there’s no physical contact allowed, but Jon still smiles as if they’re meeting at Fairmount Park to play football instead of at the Allenwood Federal Correctional Complex. In two years, Jon hasn’t missed a visit; he’s the only one.

modern au starks

“you remember what happened to the starks, don’t you? that crime family in boston? i remember when they ran everything. if ned’s brother brandon hadn’t gotten killed back in ‘82, who knows how shit would’ve gone down. ned tried, but he ain’t got a head for the game. the lannisters really did a number on that whole family didn’t they. started working with the feds to take robb down when he started rebuilding the business after his daddy died. they called it the ‘red wedding’. it was his uncle’s wedding i think, where him and his crew got arrested. his ma, catelyn, she got away. the girl sansa disappeared out west somewhere when that baratheon boy, joffrey died. word is she’s trying to finish what her brother started. the other one, arya i think, heard she’s in queens somewhere, heard she’s just as dangerous, but no one has seen her. that bastard of ned’s, jon, yeah he’s up in canada doing border patrol. them other two, the boys rickon and bran, i hear bran’s up in maine keeping out of trouble. better watch out for rickon though. that boy’s got a vengeance.”

War seems like a fine adventure, the greatest most of them will ever know. Then they get a taste of battle.

For some, that one taste is enough to break them. Others go on for years, until they lose count of all the battles they have fought in, but even a man who has survived a hundred fights can break in his hundred-and-first. Brothers watch their brothers die, fathers lose their sons, friends see their friends trying to hold their entrails in after they’ve been gutted by an axe.

They see the lord who led them there cut down, and some other lord shouts that they are his now. They take the wound, and when that’s still half-healed they take another. There is never enough to eat, their shoes fall to pieces from marching, their clothes are torn and rotting, and half of them are shitting in their breeches from drinking bad water.

If they want new boots or a warmer cloak or maybe a rusted iron halfhelm, they need to take them from a corpse, and before long they are stealing from the living too, from the smallfolk whose lands they’re fighting in, men very like the men they used to be. They slaughter their sheep and steal their chickens, and from there it’s just a short step to carrying off their daughters too. And one day they look around and realize all their friends and kin are gone, that they are fighting beside strangers beneath a banner that they hardly recognize. They don’t know where they are or how to get back home and the lord they’re fighting for does not know their names, yet here he comes, shouting for them to form up, to make a line with their spears and scythes and sharpened hoes, to stand their ground. And the knights come down on them, faceless men clad in all steel, and the iron thunder of their charge seems to fill the world…

And the man breaks.

The Great Houses - House Targaryen

The Targaryens are the blood of the dragon, descended from the high lords of the ancient Freehold of Valyria, their heritage proclaimed in a striking (some say inhuman) beauty, with lilac or indigo or violet eyes and hair of silver-gold or platinum white. Aegon the Dragon’s ancestors escaped the Doom of Valyria and the chaos and slaughter that followed to settle on Dragonstone, a rocky island in the narrow sea. It was from there that Aegon and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys sailed  to conquer the Seven Kingdoms. To preserve the blood royal and keep it pure, House Targaryen has often followed the Valyrian custom of wedding brother to sister. Aegon himself took both his sisters to wife, and fathered sons on each. The Targaryen banner is a three-headed dragon, red on black, the three heads representing Aegon and his sisters. The Targaryen words are “Fire and Blood”.
